Animation Short Film Ideas

I planned out a few concepts and ideas which I think might be fun to work with for this semester - I tried to pick ideas that would have a nice balance of elements I am comfortable with, but also elements that would encourage me to try new things or improve some areas where I've had challenges before.

Log line #1: In a bleak portrait of the future, a desperate bounty killer agrees to hunt down her own sister to make a few dollars.

For this first idea, I am thinking of rotoscoping actors then drawing in the background.  The vision I have in mind for this is a tense cat and mouse chase type scene.  It would have a lot of genre blending, mostly noir and western, and I would enjoy this since these are two of my favorite genres to work with.  In terms of stylistic skills to highlight, the current vision of the short I have relies a lot on the sound design.  I also think this short would rely a lot on shadowy lighting, which is something I would love to try and improve my skills in: lighting in animation.  Some of my influences for this idea are psychedelic "acid western" films like "El Topo" or "Dead Man", along with the Neo-noir "Blade Runner" for world building and "No Country for Old Men" for a sense of tension and danger.

Log line #2: A man rides into a booming mining town in the 1850s in hopes to live out his heroic dreams.

For the second idea, I was thinking of doing something in almost a "Keith Reynolds" style, with simplistic character designs, but sketching out a clear portrait of the town this is set in.  While my first idea subverts tropes in a dark way, this idea would subvert genre tropes in a comic way - everything that can go wrong, will go wrong, all in the matter of flipping classic western movie tropes on their head.  The man, who we expect to be someone with a moral worldview, we learn ends up having quite the opposite. Conflict and death are quick, and unexpected, as opposed to drawn out.  By the end of the short, the character who we thought was the protagonist should almost become the true antagonist.
